FIRST Project Volunteer Program
At FIRST Project we provide services and education to our clients and the community that foster healing and empowerment. We believe that building connections within the community is an important piece of our work. The Volunteer Program at FIRST strives to build connections in order to address the needs of torture survivors, the community, and FIRST Project:
Torture Survivors: Healing is an ongoing process for FIRST Project clients. Volunteers can play an important role in client healing. Torture aims to destroy a sense of community. Survivors often experience deep feelings of alienation and isolation as a result of their experiences. Volunteers can have a direct impact on the lives of survivors by providing practical assistance as well as friendship.
Community: Our volunteer program will provide meaningful opportunities for community members who want to personally respond to the needs of torture survivors. In personally serving at FIRST Project and in sharing their experiences with friends, relatives and co-workers, volunteers raise awareness about the impact of torture and its effects on individuals and communities, including our own. When volunteers serve and speak about their experiences, they will help in transforming our community into a place that welcomes, heals and protects survivors of torture and their families.
FIRST Project: With the skills, experiences, energy and compassion of volunteers, FIRST Project can better serve its clients through a multi-faceted approach to healing. We acknowledge the need for connection between our survivors and the community as vital to both our provision of services and to the healing of our clients.
