Statistics

Amnesty International estimates that there are more than 150 countries in the world that systematically practice torture. Research indicates that 5% to 35% of refugees resettled are victims of torture.

Did you know that from 1979 to 1989 there were approximately 1,016 victims of torture in Nebraska. From 1990 to 2002 there were approximately 2,553, totaling 3,569 torture victims. These numbers reflect 35% of our refuge population resettled in Nebraska by catholic Social Services and Heartland Refuree Program. The marks of torture are designed to persist long after the actual torture has ended.

Just as cancer can destroy the body physically, so too can torture unchecked, destroy the body politic.

At the F.I.R.S.T. Project, Inc., we work collaboratively with the client, community providers and available community resources to offer holistic services. As a psychological practice we have an array of services such as therapy, assessments, education and training.

Case managers work along side our therapists to compliment intervention and assure continuity of services. We utilize interpreters whom are trained by our center in mental health interpretation. We provide services to refugees addressing their torture experience. We stride to provide services that are culturally and religiously sensitive.

We accept insurance. We work with uninsured survivors to access treatment. We are able to provide these services under a grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement in Washington, D.C.
